Distiller’s Guide: Using Rosehip in Gin

Rosehip is a versatile "bridge" botanical. It sits perfectly between the bright top notes of citrus and the deep, resinous base of juniper. Because these are fine granules, they are particularly effective for shorter macerations or vapor infusion

1.  The Maceration (Pot Still)

For a traditional London Dry style, add the granules directly to the pot.

  • Usage: 1g to 3g per liter of finished spirit is a standard starting point.

  • The Result: A deeper, more "jammy" fruit character and a noticeable "slickness" on the palate that masks the harshness of the alcohol.

2. Vapor Infusion (Carter-Head / Gin Basket)

Because of the fine grind, these granules excel in the vapor path. The steam extracts the delicate floral aromatics without pulling the heavier, more bitter tannins.

  • Tip: Layer the granules between more fibrous botanicals (like Orris root or Liquorice) to prevent them from compacting and affecting vapor pressure.

3. Compound or Post-Distillation

If you are looking for that signature rose-gold hue, Rosehip granules can be used for a post-distillation cold maceration.

  • Note: This will add color and a sharp, tea-like astringency, which is excellent for "Pink Gin" profiles or fruit-forward liqueurs.

Pro Tip: Rosehip is naturally acidic. If your gin feels "thin" or lacks "legs," the pectins in Rosa canina can act as a natural modifier to add body and perceived sweetness without the need for added sugar.
