NZH-109 is an exceptionally complex and versatile hop emerging from the NZ Hops Bract Brewing Programme. This breakthrough experimental hop has generated significant excitement among brewers for its unique, multi-layered character.
Bred as a triploid selection, NZH-109 has a rich international heritage, with a lineage that includes the American aroma hop Comet, classic English varieties Fuggle and Late Cluster, and a Slovenian wild-type Saazer. This diverse genetic background fuels a symphony of aromas. Brewers report a trifecta of dominant fruit notes, including juicy stone fruit (peach, nectarine), vibrant tropical fruit (passionfruit, mango), and bright citrus (tangerine, lime zest). What truly sets it apart are the sophisticated secondary notes of white wine, melon, and a distinct cracked pepper spice finish.
This complexity makes NZH-109 a brewer’s dream. It has proven to be a standout performer in a wide range of styles, including Hazy IPAs, Pale Ales, and even crisp West Coast Pilsners. Feedback from the Bract Programme highlights its adaptability, noting that hazy styles tend to accentuate its juicy, tropical character, while brighter IPAs allow its more subtle white wine notes to shine.
