Elevate your spirit profile with our premium Blue Butterfly Pea Flower. Sourced from high-quality whole flowers and processed into a precise tea cut, this botanical is designed for maximum efficiency in maceration and distillation.
Known for its deep cobalt hue and unique pH-sensitive properties, it is the industry secret behind the world’s most captivating "color-changing" gins and liqueurs.
The Magic of Anthocyanins
The Butterfly Pea flower is rich in protocyanin, a natural pigment that acts as a visual litmus test.
-
The Blue Phase: In a neutral spirit (like a standard London Dry base), the flower imparts a deep, royal blue.
-
The Pink/Purple Shift: When an acidic mixer is added—such as tonic water or lime juice—the pH level drops, triggering a stunning transformation from deep blue to vibrant violet or soft rose pink.
Applications in Distillation and Compounding
For distillers, the tea cut offers a distinct advantage over whole flowers. The increased surface area allows for a faster, more consistent infusion without the clumping often found with powders.
-
Post-Distillation Maceration: To retain the color, we recommend macerating the tea cut in your finished spirit post-distillation. The color-giving compounds are delicate; high-heat distillation will strip the color, leaving only a subtle, earthy sweetness.
-
Flavor Profile: While primarily used for color, it contributes a light, herbaceous, and "woody" base note—reminiscent of fine green tea—that complements juniper, citrus, and coriander perfectly.
-
Color Stability: Our tea cut provides a stable, 100% natural pigment that holds its brilliance in high-proof alcohol.
How to Create the Perfect "Color-Change" Gin
-
Infuse: Add approximately 5g–10g of tea cut per liter of finished gin (adjust based on desired intensity).
-
Monitor: Macerate for 24–48 hours. The tea cut ensures a rapid "bleed" of color for a uniform batch.
-
Filter: Fine-filter the spirit to remove the botanical particulates.
-
The Reveal: Bottle your "Blue Gin." When your customers serve it with tonic, they’ll witness the signature shift to bright purple or pink right in the glass.
