Schwarzbier is a clean and crisp dark lager that challenges expectations. Despite its opaque black colour, this beer is surprisingly light-bodied and refreshing, with a smooth, dry finish. The aroma and flavour are dominated by elegant roasted malts, which provide subtle notes of dark chocolate and coffee without any harshness. With a history stretching back to the Middle Ages, it is one of Germany's oldest beer styles, originating in the regions of Thuringia and Saxony.

The Allure of the Schwarzbier: A Classic Dark Lager

The Schwarzbier, or "black beer," is a classic German dark lager with a history that stretches back centuries. Originating in Thuringia and Saxony, this style is one of Germany’s oldest and most enigmatic. While its deep, opaque colour might suggest a heavy, roasted character, the Schwarzbier is anything but.

The true nature of this beer lies in its deceptive elegance. A proper Schwarzbier is defined by its clean, crisp lager character, which provides a refreshing counterpoint to its appearance. It has a complex but smooth flavour profile, often featuring notes of dark chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt, but without any harsh bitterness or astringency. The malt's delicate roast notes are balanced by a subtle sweetness and a dry, clean finish. The result is a beer that is remarkably drinkable, light on the palate, and endlessly satisfying. This unique balance of deep colour and light body makes the Schwarzbier a truly distinctive and captivating beer style.

NOTE: Supplied in a 16.5 litre HDPE cube. These kits are generally designed to add 3 litres of water immediately prior to fermentation to achieve the ideal balance. You may if you wish, not add the extra water for a richer, higher gravity version.
