The punches to the face keep on coming...alcohol excise has just risen again from 5th Aug rising to $61.32 per LAL (litre of pure alcohol) for beer and a whopping $103.89 per LAL for Spirits. Australian drinkers will now pay 71 cents and $1.25 in excise tax on a schooner of full-strength beer and whiskey on the rocks respectively. A carton of 24x375ml 4.9% VB (beer) has $20.70 excise and a 40% 700mL Bottle of Starward Whisky has $29.09 excise on it and there is 10% GST on top at the till as well.
We now enjoy responsibly the third highest alcohol excise tax in the world just behind Finland and Norway and it certainly feels like we have won the bronze medal at the wrong end of the leaderboard. This excise tax is putting immense pressure on already struggling craft brewers and distillers and our on-premise bars, pubs, and licenced venue operators.
